Ombudsman's absence

Seminar in Berlin

We are pleased to inform that on 01 – 02 Dec. 2014 the Ombudsman will take part in a conference in Berlin, entitled "Helping students succeed: Core elements of student support". Anna Cybulko received an invitation to the event from the European Association of International Education (EAIE).

The Ombudsman's presentation is scheduled as part of the panel: "Higher Education Ombudsmen: Resort of Last Help and of last Hope?" which will be hosted by Josef Leidenfrost (Austria) and Helga Nolte (Germany).

Visit of UMK Ombudsman

On Thursday, 13 Nov. 2014, the Ombudsman received a visit from the Ombudsman of UMK, Bartłomiej Chludziński, accompanied by two student volunteers. The meeting served the purpose of exchanging experience and generating new ideas.

Conference

On 29 Oct. 2014 the Ombudsman participated in a conference organized by the Minister of Economy. The conference focused on the proposed bill on supporting amicable methods of dispute resolution.

Workshop on International Mediation Day

On Wednesday 15 Oct. 2014 at 3 p.m. the Ombudsman's Team will conduct a workshop: Become an Ombudsman, or how to effectively deal with problems at the university.  You are welcome to attend!

Return to work

We are pleased to inform all visitors that the Ombudsman, Anna Cybulko, has returned from her vacation. She is available in her office on Mondays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It should be noted that since the publication of the volume there have been some important developments, including, the appointment of two academic ombudsmen.

Meeting with Polish Ombudsman

The meeting took place on 30 June 2014 in the office of the Human Rights Defender (HRD), Prof. Irena Lipowicz, on her invitation.  The meeting was attended by the UW Ombudsman, Anna Cybulko, Dr. Ewa Gmurzyńska from the Center for Dispute and Conflict Resolution at the Faculty of Law and Administration, Deputy HRD, Dr. Ryszard Czerniawski, and senior legal advisor to HRD, Dariusz Supeł.

Our collaboration with the Human Rights Defender (the Polish Ombudsman) started during this year's ENOHE conference, at the HRD's initiative. At the meeting, the University Ombudsman was re-assured of the Human Rights Defender's support, who promised to back her activities and help in their further development.

We look forward to an opportunity to collaborate with the HRD on educational projects in the near future.

ENOHE in Warsaw - 15-17 May, 2014

The 11th Annual Conference of the European Network of Ombudsmen in Higher Education (ENOHE) took place on the premises of the University of Warsaw on 15-17 May, 2014. The conference was organized by the Center for Dispute and Conflict Resolution at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw and the Office of Independent Adjudicator (Great Britain).

The conference was the first one both to be hosted by Poland and attended by the UW Ombudsman, who has been conducting her activities since November 2011.

Among the participants of the ENOHE conference in Warsaw were university ombudsmen from numerous countries, including Great Britain, Canada, the United States, Spain, the Netherlands, Denmark and Mexico.

Our University Ombudsman for student and employee affairs, Anna Cybulko, gave a presentation entitled: "Empowering the ombudsman: How to find, choose and appoint the correct person?"

The three days of the ENOHE conference were a period of exciting and fruitful cooperation with our counterparts. We are looking forward to meeting them again next year!

Visit of Ombudsman from Technical University of Darmstadt

On 30 March – 5 April 2014 our office had a pleasure to receive a visit from Wolf Hertlein, the Ombudsman at the Technical University of Darmstadt.

The visit was characterized by an atmosphere of friendly cooperation and exchange of views. The two ombudsmen will have an opportunity to meet again soon, at the ENOHE conference in Warsaw in May. We hope for even closer cooperation between the two ombudsmen in the future.

The program of the ENOHE conference promises to be extremely interesting. The UW Ombudsman, Anna Cybulko, will give a presentation on 17 May, entitled "Empowring the ombudsman: How to find, choose and appoint the correct person?" We look forward to the conference as another forming experience.

 

ENOHE Conference 2014 to be held in Warsaw

The 2014 conference of the European Network of Ombudsmen in Higher Education (ENOHE) will take place in Warsaw on 15-17 May. The organizers of the conference include ENOHE, the Center for Dispute and Conflict Resolution at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw and the British Office of Independent Adjudicator.

It is already the 11th annual ENOHE conference but the first one hosted in Poland and attended by our University Ombudsman. The topic of the conference is:

"Higher Education Ombudsmen and Empowerment

Empowering students – Empowering universities – Empowering ombudsmen"

Report of Ombudsman's activities for 2013

On 31 Jan. 2014 the University Ombudsman submitted her annual report for 2013 to the Rector of the University of Warsaw. The report had been prepared on the basis of the provision of § 11 of the Ordinance No. 30 of the Rector on the appointment of the Ombudsman.

Ombudsman returns to work

We wish to inform that the Ombudsman will return to work on Monday, 20 Jan. 2014. This means that all staff matters that have been suspended will be now attended to. The Ombudsman will have personal insight into each case.

We encourage everyone to make appointments with the Ombudsman.

Guests from Masaryk University

On 8 Jan. 2014 we had a pleasure to receive a visit of doctoral students of law from Masaryk University in Brno. The visit was organized by the Foundation of University Law Clinics. The Ombudsman's meeting with the Swiss doctoral fellows took place in her office. The guests had a chance to learn about the activity of the university ombudsman. Mrs Cybulko explained the principles guiding her work, discussed the methods of work and typical cases and answered the visitors' questions. We hope we have provided inspiration for another institution of higher education.

The office of the Ombudsman has an important role to play in the academic community. Therefore, we are pleased with any interest in our activities by other institutions of higher education. We thank our guests for their visit and wish them luck and perseverance in their activities. We are holding our fingers crossed for their success and look forward to further cooperation.

17 October - International Mediation Day

The International Mediation Day has been celebrated on each third Thursday  since 2005. It was initiated by the Association for Conflict Resolution, which is an American association of professionals who assist in conflict resolution. In Poland, the International Mediation Day will be celebrated for the sixth time.

The Mediation Week – 14-19 October

This year, to celebrate the International Mediation Day, the Ministry of Justice initiated the Mediation Week, which lasted from 14 Oct to 19 Oct. Many institutions engaged in disseminating information about this way of dispute resolution nationwide, including courts, prosecutor's offices and numerous non-governmental organizations. The Mediation Week featured conferences, meetings and workshops on ADR, as well as offered the opportunity to receive free advice and opinion of mediators. It constituted a perfect opportunity to learn more about mediation, which is a fast and effective alternative method of conflict resolution.

90 problems reported this year

 

Since the beginning of January 2013 as many as 90 cases involving problems in the academic life at the University of Warsaw have been reported to the Ombudsman.
