Standards of practice and the code of ethics of the Ombudsman of the University of Warsaw

The activities of the UW Ombudsman are based on the standards of practice and code of ethics adopted by the International Ombudsman Association (IOA).

Confidentiality

The information entrusted to the Ombudsman as well as the identity of the clients are confidential. Confidentiality is regarded as the fundamental principle of the Ombudsman’s function, and may be breached only in the case of a direct and imminent danger or risk of a major damage.

Independence

The Office of the Ombudsman operates independently of academic structures and reports to the university authorities solely for administrative and budgetary purposes. The Ombudsman has access to the people and information relevant to the case, constantly taking care to observe the principle of confidentiality.

Neutrality and impartiality

The Ombudsman is neutral and does not represent either the university or the individual in matters brought to its attention, but advocates fairness and equity.
The Ombudsman has no personal stake in the outcome of any situation and avoids situations which could create a conflict of interest.

Informality

The Ombudsman does not participate in any formal adjudicative or administrative procedure related to the reported cases, but may conduct informal inquiry.
All communication with the Ombudsman Office is voluntary and takes place only upon the interested party’s request.
